Varun Grover Biography

Varun Grover is a comedian, writer, lyricist, actor, dialogue writer and screenwriter associated with Bollywood. He was seen in a cameo role in 2015 Ranbir Kapoor movie, Bombay Velvet as a standup-comedian. As a lyricist he is best known for writing all the songs of the sleeper hit of 2015, Dum Laga Ke Haisha. "Sunder Susheel", "Moh Moh Ke Dhaage” and its title track are quite memorable. He also penned lyrics for both the parts of Gangs of Wasseypur and Ankhon Dekhi.

Grover was born in Sundernagar, Himachal Pradesh on 26 January 1980. He is quite attached to the movies of 1990s, a time he spent as a teenager. He used to write poetry for friends and magazines since school days. His initial years were spent in Dehradun and later he moved to Lucknow to complete Civil Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi in 2003. He worked as a software engineer for a while and moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in writing. In 2005, he joined the team of The Great Indian Comedy Show, as a co-writer and since then he is a standup comedian apart from a writer and lyricist. When he quit his permanent job in Pune, it was not easy for him to find writing assignments. Since The Great Indian Comedy Show happened to him, no turning back after that.

Dus Ka Dum, Oye It’s Friday and The Great Indian Comedy Show are the successful shows for which he wrote scripts. But his real dream was to write for movies. He co-scripted Accident on Hill Road, starring Farooq Sheikh and Celina Jaitley, which the screenwriter feels ‘signed out of desperation’. Then he wrote the lyrics for Kashyap’s That Girl in Yellow Boots and Gangs of Wasseypur, though writing scripts was his prime name. But when he got fame as a lyricist, he continued to write songs and penned many beautiful ones like Ankhon Dekhi and Prague. Womaniya of Gangs of Wasseypur Ist and Aayi Bahaar of Ankhon Dekhi earned him nominations as a lyricist at award functions.
