Varsha Gautham Biography

Varsha Gautham is an Indian sailor, who is the youngest Indian to win an Asian Games medal, at the age of 16. She won the bronze medal at 2014 Asian Games in women's 29er event, along with Aishwarya Nedunchezhiyan. In 2018 Asian games, she along with Sweta Shervegar grabbed silver in 49er FX Women's event as India win three medals in sailing this tournament. Varsha is 20 year old now, and one of the most promising Indian sailors.

 

Varsha was born on 12 January 1998. As a child, Varsha had almost drowned twice. Her parents felt that their daughter should learn to swim. During the swimming classes, at the age of 8, young Varsha started dreaming about sailing. At the age of 16, she went on to become the youngest Indian to win a medal in Asian Games. She was also the first Indian woman to win a medal in sailing, when she got it in 2014. Whole day of Varsha revolves around the sport, when she goes to the sailing club in the morning, works on her boat, sails and then returns back in the evening.

 

She has left her hometown for the past few years, and currently settled in Mumbai to pursue her dreams. As a young sailor she sailed only in weekends. But everything changed when Coach Pete Conway joined the Yatching Association of India in 2011. Her profession was changed from an amateur level to a true professional. Coach Pete Conway played an important role in her first achievement in Asian games 2014. She received full support from her family. In fact her father joined the sailing club with her to understand the sport. He was also happy that she stick on to one sport for a long time.
