Varavara Rao Biography

Varavara Rao is an activist, orator and writer from Telangana. He is a poet, who has been writing since 1957, best known to be a Marxist critic in Telugu literature. He also owns more than four decades of experience as a Telugu teacher. As an activist, he has been associated with many progressive and revolutionary journals in Telugu. He founded Srujana (creation), a forum for modern literature in Telugu in 1966, and successfully operated it till 1992. He was one of the founders of Viplava Rachayitala Sangahm (Virasam) - a Revolutionary Writers' Association. He came to limelight when he was arrested by Pune police in Hyderabad in 2018, following raids on his flat in the city in a case relating to alleged conspiracy to assassinate Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

 

Varavara Rao was born on November 3, 1940 in Chinna Pendyala, Warangal district, present-day Telangana. He was born into a middle class Telugu Brahmin family. His studies were completed from Chinna Pendyala, Warangal and Hyderabad. He started publishing poems at the age of 17. After his Master’s though he enrolled for PhD to pursue research on poetry, he left his research works and started his career as a lecturer of Telugu language. For a brief period he worked as a Publication Assistant at DAVP, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, New Delhi, before he moved back to continue his career as a lecturer.

 

Initially he worked in Mahabubnagar district and during those days he got transformed with revolutionary ideas. Later his literary works reflected the same. His works appeared in literary journals of different languages. His poetry collections are Chali Negallu, Jeevanaadi, Ooregimpu, Swechcha, Samudram, Bhavishyathu Chitrapatam, Muktakantam, Aa Rojulu, Unnadedo Unnattu, Dagdhamauthunna Bagdad, Mounam Oka Yuddhaneram, Antassootram, Telangana Veeragatha, Palapitta Paata and Beejabhoomi.

 

Rao's political and literary activity enraged the government of Andhra Pradesh in 1973 for which he was arrested. He was also imprisoned during Emergency period and in the 1980s and later too for similar reasons. It was aligned that he was involved with Maoists. He supported Telangana Movement since late 1960s. He was arrested on 28 August, 2018 in a case relating to alleged conspiracy to assassinate Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the activist was arrested again in November for alleged Link to Maoist plot.
