Vanamala Pawar Biography

Vanamala Pawar was one of the earliest heroines on Indian screen mostly associated with Marathi cinema. She was also a film producer. She is best known for the Marathi movie, Shyam Chi ayi, which won President’s medal in 1953 for best actress. She was the film’s producer and lead actress as well. She was a freedom fighter too, associated with Quit India Movement in 1942. Madhya Pradesh’s Director General of Police Anand Rao Pawar was her nephew. She passed away on May 30th 2007 at Gwailor, Madhya Pradesh aged 92. She was suffering from prolonged illness.  

 

She was born on May 22nd 1915 at Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Her birth name is Susheeladevi Pawar and she accepted the screen name, Vanamala Pawar for movies. She entered movies in the early 1940s and was one of the earliest heroines on Indian silver screen. She began her film career at the age of 21. She was a graduate and was also a teacher when she entered film world. She was a trained musician and also a dancer. Between 1941 and 1954, she acted in both Marathi and Hindi movies. Sikander (1941) was her first big hit, where she acted aside Prithvi Raj Kapoor and Sohrab Modi.

 

Vanmala acted in several films of Acharya Pralhad Keshav Atre and the most noted roles include - 'Payachi Dasi', 'Shyamchi Aai' and 'Moruchi Mavshi'. Her best performances were born for Atre’s movies. In total she acted in 32 movies. She was also associated with Marathi theatre. In her last days, during her 90s, she was involved in social causes and ran school to train children in culture and traditional Indian arts.
