Vakkantham Suryanarayana Rao Biography

Vakkantham Suryanarayana Rao is a Telugu language writer who wrote several short stories and serialized novels for magazines. He is a great name in Telugu literature for fictional detective stories. He also translated spiritual texts for the Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam and wrote novels of different genres. His son Vakkantham Vamsi is a popular screenwriter in Telugu films. Rao has 84 titles to his credit, which includes short stories & novels belonging to the genres - crime, social, women oriented, epic and stage plays. He has created a detective character called Tempo named after his mentor writer Temporau, and wrote a dozen of novels with Detective Tempo in the lead.

Vakkantham Suryanarayana Rao was born in Arikela Village of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. Rao had studied up to school final. Having witnessed the first independence day of India, he had a sense of patriotism and social awareness in his mind since childhood. He wrote his first story in his childhood for kids. When he showed the story to his father, he appreciated and encouraged him. He also advised him to read extensively before starting writing. He gave him a novel titled, Ithanni Nammakandi authored by Temporau. V.S. Rao read it several times and continued reading other books as well. Later Temporau became his mentor as well.

Apart from authoring numerous short stories, plays and novels, he also wrote a few movie scripts. Later his son followed this tradition. Rao also penned a few film songs in Telugu. He wrote his first novel titled "Abala Aantharyam” dedicated to woman kind, and was published in the year 1966. Rao became full-fledged writer since 1980 and published his detective novels and short stories under his pseudonym V.S Rao.
