Vahbiz Bharucha Biography

Vahbiz Bharucha is a Rugby player from India, and currently the captain of woman’s national team too. In 2018 she took national team to Singapore for the Asia Rugby Women’s Championship. It was her first match as the captain of the 15a format. 25-year old Bharucha is also a physiotherapist by profession. She plays rugby by vocation. Cycling and running are her other hobbies.

She is the youngest of three siblings, and her father never discriminated her from two elder brothers. She was never told to choose a soft sport or forced to take the toys meant for girls, as he hated gender stereotyping. It helped Vahbiz a lot in her sports career and choosing a rare game indeed.

She played handball till class 10 as suggested by her sports teacher, and played wrestling till class 7. She has been fully supported by her father for her sports career. From 2009 onwards she started playing rugby and initially it was pretty much like wrestling in motion. Just a few months before her 10th board exam, Suhrud Khare – a female rugby player and coach visited their school, who was scouting for young players then, suggested Vahbiz to switch to Rugby. She felt her perfect for this game. Till then Vahbiz was playing handball.

As a member of national team she first played for Thailand. For the next four years, she mostly played Rugby Sevens. Over the years she grew along with the game. She got selected as Captain in 2013, and most recently led the women team to Asia Rugby Women’s Championship in 2018. Over the years there is improvement in the training section in India, a ‘nutritious diet’ somewhere remains missing.
