V. S. Srinivasa Sastri Biography

V. S. Srinivasa Sastri was a freedom fighter, politician and educationalist from Tanjore, Tamil Nadu. He was known as an orator and administrator too. Sastri was one of the founding members of the Indian Liberal Party and one of the Indian leaders who strongly opposed India partition in 1947. He earned much fame serving as member of the Madras Legislative Council from 1913 to 1916, Imperial Legislative Council of India from 1916 to 1919 and the Council of State from 1920 to 1925. He was a close associate of the Mahatma was a teacher, legislator, ambassador and statesman. He was one of the top 5 orators of the world during his time and was very fluent in English to make whole Indians proud.

 

He was born in a poor family on 22 September 1869 in Valangaiman, Tanjore district. He was born in an orthodox religious family of Hindu priests. Later the family migrated to Kumbakonam. Sastri had his schooling in the neighbouring town of Kumbakonam and later joined Government College for higher studies. He was first rank holder of BA exams and with high distinction in two subjects. He began his teaching career as School Master in the Municipal High School, Mayuram. Later he became lecturer in the Municipal College, Salem and has also worked under different educational institutions. He became the headmaster of Hindu High School in 1907.

 

In January 1907 he joined the Servants of India Society which earned him reputation as an orator in English. He spent more than 35 years in social life with remarkable success. Sastri conducted many foreign trips and also participated in international conferences which earned him fame.
