V. R. Shankar Biography

V. R. Shankar is a film director of Malayalam best known for his directorial debut – Street Light released in 2012. The movie starred Krishnan Balakrishnan, Aparna Nair, Irshad and Maya Vishwanath in lead roles. He has also scripted and directed a few popular television serials. He is also known as a writer who has published a few books. Oru valakilukkathinte Oarmakku and Kaappi marangalkkidayile penkutty are his short story collections and Poopoloral, Oru Pennum Parayathathu – his novels. Poo poloral tells the story of ‘Kunjan’, a man from Vattakkulangara village and this novel was published in the year 2010. He also got the Mahatmaji Kathasamanam in 1998.

 

Shankar was born in Thiruvananthapuram in 1981 to Vijayamma and Rajappan. He belongs to Palamoodu village near Vembayam. He schooled at Kanniakulangara and completed graduation from Govt. College Nedumangad. He started his career as a short story writer and a journalist. As a media journalist he has done a few programs for television and radio. He has scripted and directed a few TV programs like 'Sindhurasmaranakal', 'Gramodhayam', 'Nakshatraperuma', 'Archana', Oarmayiloode etc and a few documentary films like  'Varnacharthu' and ‘Havyam’.

 

Shankar made his directorial debut with the movie, Street Lights in 2012. The movie is based on his debut novel - Oru Pennum Parayathathu. The movie narrates the life of a prostitute who fights against the corrupted society and social and political evils and she wins at last. The songs were composed by Kaithapram Vishwanathan Nambudiri. As a writer he is known for choosing socially relevant subjects and bold approach to it. Many of his articles have invited wide discussions and controversies too.
