V. R. Krishna Iyer Biography

Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer an Indian judge and minister who worked for reformation of the Indian criminal justice system also worked in the field for the poor and the underprivileged and also remained a human-rights activist and for social justice.

 

His contribution in the field of the environment and a doyen of civil liberties, throughout life is worth mentining. He was also a sports enthusiast and a prolific author. He wrote his autobiography- Wandering in Many Worldshe.

 

He was appointed a judge of the Kerala High Court on 2 July 1968. He was a member of the Law Commission from 1971 to 1973 where he drafted a comprehensive report, which would lead to the legal-aid movement in the country. Later He was appointed the judge of the Supreme Court on 17 July 1973.

 

Incidentally In June 1975, when the Allahabad High Court had given the verdict against the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and barred her from entering the Lok Sabha for another six years. Justice Iyer hearing a challenge to this order in the Supreme Court, he was both blamed for granting a conditional stay and praised for refusing an unconditional stay.

 

This made the Opposition call for her resignation interpreting this as losing the popular mandate to rule,. The next day Indira Gandhi declared a state of Emergency in the country.

 

He has written close to 100 books, on different subjects but mostly on law.
