V. R. Gowrishankar Biography

V. R. Gowrishankar is a well-known Social worker, educationalist and Religious administrator from Karnataka. He serves as the CEO and Administrator of Sringeri Math and associated organizations. He expanded the activities of the Sringeri Math to education, health care and social service, than merely remaining as a religious institution. He also worked behind the establishment of Sringeri Sharada Peetham Temple and Community center in Houston, Texas, in 2013. The Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to society. He also received Rajyotsava Prashasthi, the second highest civilian award of Karnataka state.

V. R. Gowrishankar hails from Karnataka. He was born on 30 November 1954 in a family closely associated with Sringeri Sharada Peetham. His forefathers including his father served as scholars with this religious institution. Gowrishankar completed engineering from B.M.S. College of Engineering, and also took PG in industrial management from the Indian Institute of Science. His association with Peetham began as an administrator after his studies, when he took charge as the chief executive officer and administrator of the Peetham. He also held general power of attorney of the properties and the administrative authority for more than 150 branches and other organizations.

Under his effective leadership Math expanded its activities and established schools and other organizations related to health care and social service. Free meal to children, adoption of villages, Healthcare scheme and providing educational equipment to schools were the services added to Math, as a part of expansion of activities, mostly of social value. He also took efforts in the establishment of temples outside India. Currently he manages many Math organizations, and also remains a board member of many organizations of Karnataka state.
