V. R. Gopalakrishnan Biography

V. R. Gopalakrishnan, popularly called VRG was a veteran screenwriter associated with Malayalam cinema. He has co-scripted many successful films for Mollywood, and also directed a few moveis. His association with ace filmmaker Priyadarshan had produced many super hit comedy movies like Vandanam, Cheppu, Dhim Tharikida Thom etc. His last popular success was Dileep starrer flick Ee Parakkum Thalika. Most of his film scripts belonged to comedy genre, the best instant being his last work - Ee Parakkum Thalika, one among the successful movies of early 2000s which established Dileep as an entertainer of Mollywood.

 

He was found dead at his residence at Ramananthapuram Palakkad on January 11, 2016, aged 60. He committed suicide by hanging to the ceiling of his house roof. Reason is still unknown. He is survived by his wife and two sons. A native of Thrissur, he was settled in Palakkad for over 20 years now. Bharya, Kaakkathollayiram and Kaazchakkappurathu are his directorial ventures which received moderate success at box office in the 1990s. Bharya was a sequel of Jagadeesh-Urvasi starrer Streedhanam. Top actress of 1990s, Urvasi played female lead in his movies, Bharya and Kaakkathollayiram.

 

For filmmaker Priyadarsan, VRG was not just a colleague in the film field. VRG was one of his close friends from his college days. They met each other for the first time while doing Pre-degree course at Government Arts College in Thiruvananthapuram. They were batch mates. Once VRG’s short story ‘Cycle’ bagged the Kumkumam award. Then only Priyadarshan came to know about his writing skills. That’s how VRG became Priyadarshan’s associative. After many years they met in Chennai in their struggling days, when VRG was working as assistant director of Balu Kiriyath, and was busy with the script of Padayottam.

 

VRG’s successful association with Priyan began with the movie Aryan in 1987. He worked as Priyan’s associate for 12 films, including his debut ventures in Tamil and Telugu. They together scripted the popular movies, Vandanam, Cheppu and Dhim Tharikida Thom. VRG has scripted Suresh Gopi movies - Anukudumbam.com and Pilots.
