V. Narayanasamy Biography

V. Narayanasamy is a prominent politician from Indian National Congress party. On June 6, 2016 he has sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Puducherry, along with 5 congress legislatures. This senior leader is AICC general secretary and former Union minister of state. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he was defeated by NDA candidate R. Radhakrishnan. He has never contested a state Assembly election, lost once in the two times he contested as a Lok Sabha MP. He is only the second person to assume the office of Chief Minister without having a seat in the House. When his name was announced as Chief Minister, there was wide protest from his party itself.

 

He has been nicknamed, ‘Nari’, which literally means Fox in Tamil language. He is known for his reputation for being a wily politician. Over the years, he has collected a number of political rivals, within and outside his party. Since 1985 he has spent most time in Delhi. But he played an active role in state politics too, earning him the title of a kingmaker. He served as a Rajya Sabha MP three times and a member of Lok Sabha from Puducherry constituency from 2009 to 2014. In Manmohan Singh’s cabinet he served as Minister of State of Parliamentary Affairs during his first term, and handled the portfolios Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions and Prime Minister Office during his second term.

 

V. Narayanasamy was born in Pondicherry into a humble family in 1947. His father, Velu was a toddy tapper in a small village, Thavalakkuppam. Narayanasamy was the first graduate in his family. He also completed LLB and did practice for a while before he entered active politics. He has been associated with Congress since his early 20s, and has shown his loyalty to the first family of Congress.
