V. N. Kaul Biography 
V. N. Kaul is an IAS officer, diplomat and Indian administrator who formerly served as the tenth Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) from 2002 to 2008. He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1965 and was allocated the Madhya Pradesh cadre of the IAS. Began his civil service career as Assistant Collector, Bilaspur District in Madhya Pradesh, he later served as Collector and District Magistrate of Shahdol and Durg District, and Commissioner of Indore Division.
He worked at senior levels in the government and in the United Nations, before his retirement from government service as secretary in 2002. Comptroller and Auditor General of India in Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Secretary in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and the Ministry of Coal etc are some of his administrative posts he held later. He also served as general secretary of of many leading Indian organizations. He currently serves as the Lead Independent Director of Reliance Capital. He is serving on the Eminent Persons Advisory Group of the Competition Commission of India since 2012.
His full name is Vijayendra Nath Kaul. He was born on 7 January 1943 in Jammu to a Kashmiri family. Satindra Nath Kaul and Padmavati were his parents. He belongs to a family with a long history of public service and adminstration. His great grandfather was a Judicial Minister and his grandfather was a Revenue Minister of Kashmir. Vijayendra Nath’s early education was completed at his hometown and BA and MA from St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi in 1964. He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1965 in Madhya Pradesh cadre, and till 2002 held many high posts in government service.
