V. Krishnamurthy Biography

V. Krishnamurthy is a civil servant from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. For his outstanding contributions to the field of Civil Service, government of India honoured him with the second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in the year 2007, Padma Bhushan in 1986 and Padma Shree in 1973. He played a magnificent role in the building up of two public sector industrial companies - SAIL and BHEL, and also founded Maruti Udyog Limited. He was given “The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun”, for his contributions to the promotion of bilateral economic relations and understanding of Japan in India.

 

Venkataraman Krishnamurthy, also called V. Krishnamurthy was born on 14th January 1925 in Tamil Nadu. He was born in his maternal grandfather’s home, in Karuveli, Thanjavur. During 1930 floods, the family lost their land and they moved to Chennai where his father got a job. He lost his mother during childhood. The financial condition of his family was not stable. So his brothers discontinued studies and started working, to support family. He completed his diploma in electric engineering in 1943. Later he passed UPSC exams and joined Central Engineering Services in 1955. He later took Doctorate in Economics from the Soviet Academy of Sciences.

 

He has worked as an airfield technician during World War II, after completing his diploma course. He was the founder chairman of Maruti Udyog Limited, and took efforts to manufacture India’s own car. His imprints were behind the robust health of two public sector companies – SAIL and BHEL, pulling India’s infrastructure upwards. A chartered Engineer with doctorate in Economics, he moved to very high positions within the government. Within BHEL he rose to many ranks and became the head of the company. He served as Chairman of many educational institutions of India, and currently the Chancellor of Indian Maritime University and Central University of Tamil Nadu.
