V. K. Ramasamy Biography

V. K. Ramasamy was a legendary character artist and comedian associated with Tamil cinema. He was also known as a film producer. He has given many memorable supporting roles in the golden era of Tamil cinema. His career spanned during the period - 1940s and 1990s. He has also played antagonist’s role in a few movies, though not popular. Dumm Dumm Dumm in 2001 was his last release, where he played Jyothika’s grandfather’s role. The movie represents the fourth generation of Tamil cinema. During his last years he played grandfather and father roles onscreen. Minsaara Kanavu and Arunachalam are among his last appearances. He passed away on 24 December 2002 in Chennai. He acted in more than 500 movies in his illustrious career of more than 50 years in the industry.

 

He was born in                  1926 in Virudhunagar of Madras State in British India. He was associated with plays during his early days in the 1940s and then got entry to films. He played the role of a 60-year-old father for the movie, `Naam Iruvar' (1947), the first film of the AVM Films. He played the role when he was only 21. It was his major breakthrough. But later he mostly portrayed elderly roles on screen. He also excelled as a comedian and he was frequently paired with the legendary actress Manorama for several movies.

 

He got success through the distinct dialogue delivery style and command over the language. In the 1960s and 1970s, Ramasamy acted with almost all leading actors of Tamil film industry from T.R. Mahalingam, M.G Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Jai Shankar, Ravichandran, Muthuraman, and the latest Kamal Hassan and Rajnikanth. A temple priest, a comedian, a wicked or a lustful womanizer – he has played a variety of roles onscreen.
