V. G. Jog Biography

Vishnu Govind Jog, shortly pronounced as V. G. Jog was one of the foremost Indian artists of violin in Hindustani style of music. He is credited for introducing violin into Hindustani music. He was one of the most renowned violin artists in Hindustani music in the 20th century. Vishnu Govind Jog was a disciple of renowned musician Baba Allauddin Khan, one of the doyens of Indian classical music all time who laid the foundation of a modern Maihar gharana and composed many beautiful ragas. He was honoured by Padma Bhushan award in 1982. He was a regular artist of All India Radio Kolkata station. Since 1999, Pandit Jog had been suffering from Parkinson's disease and he died on 31 January 2004.

 

Jog was born on 22 February 1922. He received initial training from S. C. Athavale and Ganpat Rao Purohit. It was continued by Vishweswar Shastry, S. N. Ratanjankar and a brief period under celebrated musician Baba Allauddin Khan. He learnt Gwalior, Agra and Bakhle styles of music. He earned a master's degree in music from Bhatkhande College of Hindustani Music in Lucknow in 1944 and later joined the same college as a music teacher. Later he served as faculty in several colleges including Ali Akbar College of Music. At a young age, he got opportunity to work with great musicians at Bhatkhande College of Music, Lucknow.

 

He is also regarded as an incomparable accompanist with the ability to sense the pulse and mood of audiences and known most for his association with Ustad Bismillah Khan which earned acclamations both in India as well as abroad. Sangeet Natak Academy award in 1983 and the Padma Bhushan in 1985 are the major honours received by him.
