V. Dakshinamoorthy Biography

V. Dakshinamoorthy is a veteran Carnatic singer and music director of Malayalam and Tamil movies. He has composed a few songs for Hindi movies also. Yet he predominantly worked in Malayalam movies most. He has done more than 125 movies and most of them are still regarded as classic. He stopped giving music to movies during 1988, the last movie being Idanazhiyiloru Kaalocha, recording the title track with Yesudas. But after a long break of 20 years, he recorded another Yesudas song most recently. He composed 4 songs for the movie Mizhikal saaksji in the year 2008. He also owns a record for setting a composition for Yesudas and his song Vijay Yesudas for the movie- Poomukhappadiyil Ninneym Kathu during 80’s as a rare treat.

 

Dakshinamoorthy was born on 22 December 1919 to D. Venkateswara Iyer and Parvathi Ammal in Alappuzha district. Seeing his interest in music, his mother taught him Tyagaraja Keerthans at a younger age. Later he learned carnatic music from Venkatachalam Potty in Trivandrum. His debut movie as a music composer was Kunchakko’s Nalla Thanga. The hero of the film was Augustin Joseph, father of singer K. J. Yesudas. He sang a few songs also in the movie.

 

Among all lyrists, he was associated with lyricist Srikumaran Thampi most. A.R.Rehman’s father, R.K.Shekhar has worked as assistant of Moorthy for a few years. Navalokam, Seetha, Viyarppinte Vila, Sri Guruvayoorappan, Kadamattathachan, Kavyamela, Seeta, Vilakku vangiya veena and Indulekha are the most popular movies of Murthy during 70’s. The most famous lullaby of Malayalam movies – Paattu paadi urakkam jnan of the movie Seeta was composed by Dhakshina Murthy. Not only that, before taking a break from the industry, he composed the masterpiece of his life. The song was ‘Vaathil pazhuthiloode’ of Idanazhiyiloru Kaalocha. The movie song still remains as the most evergreen romantic song of 80’s for its unique tunes, unparallel lyrics written by O.N.V.Kurup and Gandharva voice of Yesudas. Soon he declared retirement from the industry.

 

His other popular songs are – Swapnangale of Kavyamela, Uthara swayamvaram Kathakali of danger biscuit and Kattile pazhmulam thandil ninnum of Vilaykku Vangiya Veena. He has won Kerala state awards in the year 1971.    He died on 2 August 2013 at the age of 94 in Chennai owing to age related illnesses.
