Uttam Mohanty Biography

Uttam Mohanty is one of the most popular actors of Oriya language. He has acted in 135 Oriya films to date and 30 Bengali films and has also worked in one Hindi movie, Naya Zaher opposite Satabdi Ray. Now he is active in Oriya television industry and is successful too. His family was settled in Baripada 150 years ago and was born at Balrampur in Bihar. He completely dominated Oriya film industry during 1980’s and was the top star during the time. He is married to Rriya actress Aparajita Mohanty.

 

He completed his early education from Maharaja Krushna chandra High school and MPC college of Baripada. He was active in drama in those days. Badminton and table tennis were his other favourites. After completing graduation in commerce he went to Ludhiana for chartered accountancy and stayed with his elder brother. When he came to know that a film is made in Baripada, he decided to try his luck. Impressed by his looks, he was given a role and the movie, Swabhimaan thus became his debut movie. it happened to be the debut movie of Rita Chand also, his co-actress. The 1977 film was a box office hit and his acting was appreciated. Thus he seriously turned to acting.

 

Thus movies like Pati Patni, Nijhum ratira sathi, Chinha Achhinha, Ramayana, Tapasya, Ram Balram and Gouri happened one after the other and he established as the top romantic hero of Ollywood during 1980’s. Even actor Mithun Chakraborty, who acted with him in one movie appreciated his talent and commented that he was lucky to work with Mohanty. He has received State Film Award for Best actor for Phula Chandana, Jhiati Sita pari, Danda Balunga and Suna chadhei and Best Supporting actor for To Binu Anyagati nahin. In 2012, he was awarded with Odisha Living Legend Award.
