Usha Mangeshkar Biography

Usha Mangeshkar is a playback singer of Bollywood during 1970’s and 80’s. She is the younger sister of top playback singer of India – Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle and music director Hridaynath Mangeshkar. She is daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. Though she is not popular as her elder sisters, she is remembered most a few songs of her own. Among all popular tracks, songs of Block buster hit ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ are noted most. The title track, Jai jai santoshi maa helped her to earn a Filmfare nomination too. ‘Tu Mungda’ song pictured on Helen was also sung by her.

 

She has sung for many Marathi and Gujarati movies of which songs of Marathi movie – Pinjara are noted most. She has been nominated in Filmfare awards 3 times – Mein to aarthi of Jai Santoshi maa (1975), Tu mungda of Inkaar (1977) and Humse Nazar To Milao of Ikraar (1980), though couldn’t win it at least once. But she has won Bengal Films- Journalism Association awards for the title track of Jai Santoshi maa. She has sung a few songs along with her elder sisters. ‘Aaya Mausam Dosti Ka’ of Meine pyar kiya is one such popular track that she has sung along with her sister Lata Mangeshkar. Another popular track is Apalam Chapalam of Azaad. Both have sung this track together at many concerts. She has sung Kahe Tarasaye Jayara of the movie Chitra Lekha, along with Asha Bhosle.

 

Usha Mangeshkar was born in a musical family as the daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti (Shudhamati) in the year 1935. She was the third of the sisters, but elder to Hridyanath. Talented people were all around her. As similar to her siblings, she also had her formal training in classical singing from her father. Due to early death of father during her childhood and bad financial situations, she had a struggled childhood. At that time, their elder sister Lata Mangeshkar used to act in a few Marathi movies as a child artist to support the family. Following her elder sisters she also reached Bollywood and sang a few songs. This group of 3 sisters came to be known as ‘Mangeshkar sisters’.

 

Her other popular tracks include – Lag gaa gale of Woh jo haseena, Goro Ki Naa Kalo ni  of Disco dancer, Pakdo, Pakdo and Rang Jamake Jayenge  of Naseeb, Aavo aavo momino  of Nurani Chehra, Oh Chali Chali  of Bluff master, Cabuliwalaah, I love you of Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin, Saare Niyam Tod Do of Khubsurat and Title track of Khatta meetta.
