Urmila Matondkar Biography

Urmila Matondkar is a successful actress of Bollywood during middle 90’s. Though she has done some hit movies during early 90’s, she got quick attention from public through ‘Rangeela re’ song of movie Rangeela in 1995. Very soon she behan to be noticed as ‘sex symbol’ and director Ram Gopal Varma proved to be her godfather who presented glamour-less Urmila in a new style, no one has ever seen onscreen. It was A.R.Rehman’s debut Hindi as a music composer. She debut as a child actress in 1981 movie Kalyug. Yet she got attention through ‘Lakdi ki Khatti’ song of Shekher Kapoor’s Masoom in 1983. In the movie Masoom, she acted as the eldest of three kids of Nasaruddin Shah.

 

As heroine her debut movie was Narasimha in 1991, followed by Chamatkar in 1992. Before that she has done less significant roles in movies like Chanakya (Malayalam), Bhavna and Sur sangam. But she became a popular actress of Bollywood through Ram Gopal Varma’s Rangeela, who casted her in a string of movies like Jungle, Kaun, Mast, Daud, Satya, Bhoot, Pyar tune kya kiya and Telugu movie Anaganaga Oka Roju. She did an item role in Company and RGV’s Aag too, where she brought to screen back, the item song pictured on Helen – Mehbooba. Among all the movies, critically well acclaimed movie was Satya, for which she won Filmfare critics award in 1998. She has done a Malayalam movie as lead heroine in Thacholi Vargeese Chekavar of Malayalam, opposite Mohan Lal.

 

Though Rangeela has given her a ‘sex symbol’ image for her beautiful dance steps and costumes she used in the movie, she is always seen among the most talented actresses of Bollywood. In Pyar tune kya kiya, she did a commendable job as an obsessive lover, with some negative traits and in Pingar, we saw her growing as a matured actress. Through Khubsurat, she was presented as both a traditional actress as well as a modern girl, while in Jungle she appeared as a simple girl. In Kaun, she acted as a psychic while in Ek hassena thi, she did a powerful role as a girl who takes revenge against her lover Saif Ali Khan for betraying her. Bhoot was a successful movie, after a string of flops where she did a great job of a ghost-possessed housewife. She has done comic roles in movies like Kuwara too.

 

Songs pictured on her are specially choreographed and we have seen many romantic songs of Urmila too. Other successful and critically well acclaimed movies include Jaanam samja karo, Tehzeeb, Khubsurat, Hum tum pe marthe hain, Bas ek pal, Bas ek pal, Meine Gandhi ko nahin mara, Deewangee and Judai. Her major flops include Daud, Karzz, Kudrat, Dillagi, Deewane, Nayana and Banaras.
