Urmila Mahanta Biography

Urmila Mahanta is an Indian actress from Assam who appears in movies and television serials. She gained attention soon after her film debut through Tamil crime thriller, Vazhakku Enn 18/9. The movie directed by Balaji Sakthivel won National award for best film in Tamil at 2012 award functions. Urmila has also appeared in various plays, short films and is a graduate of FTII, Pune. She also appeared in a music video of Tarali Sarma's album Henguliya.

Urmila Mahanta was born in Sonapur, Assam. Her parents are Giridhar Mahanta and Ramala Mahanta and she had 3 siblings. Her schooling was completed at Sonapur and later she graduated from Dimoria College in Khetri, Kamrup (M). She also joined FTII Pune. She spent major part of her life in Mumbai. Urmila has acting experiences since childhood and she used to participate in school plays also. She has also received many prizes. Later she appeared in television serials such as Murder and Tejimola for Doordarshan (NE). Later she appeared in many short films which was shown at various international film festivals. Aaliya and Their Story and Cheng Kurthy are her award winning short films.

She was spotted by Tamil film director Balaji Sakthivel of Kaadal fame at International Film Festival of India at Goa and signed her for the lead role for his upcoming thriller - Vazhakku Enn 18/9. She played the role of a housemaid Jyoti in this movie. The critically acclaimed movie was well praised for her acting skills as well. She is to debut Bollywood with an untitled project, directed Dilip K. Mukharia where she portrays the lead role. She played supporting role in Ajita Suchitra Veera's Ballad of Rustom.
