Unwan Chishti Biography

Unwan Chishti was a popular Urdu poet of 20^th century. He lived during 5 February 1937 – 1 February 2004. He was also a scholar and known as a literary critic too. He is well remembered for his significant contributions in the form of Nazms, Ghazals, Criticism and Historian of Literature. He was a well-known academician who served as the Teacher at Jamia Millia Islamia University and later as Head of Urdu Department. He retired as Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Languages in 1997. He has published three collections of poems – Zauq e Jamaal Nim baz and Aks o shakhs, and has also authored books on Research and Criticism.

Unwan Chishti was born on 5 February 1937 in Manglaur, District Haridwar, Uttarakhand. His real name is Iftikhar ul Hasan. He was the son of Pirzadah Shah Anwarul Hasan Anwar Manglauri. BHis early education was completed at Manglaur and Muzaffarnagar, followed by Master’s degree in literature, geography and Urdu and PhD. After completing his Master’s degree, he started his professional career as a lecturer at Shoaib Mohammadia College in Agra. He later joined Jamia Millia Islamia in 1964, continuing with his studies as well. Since 1964 till his retirement, he was associated with Jamia Millia Islamia and held many administrative positions.

He was active in his literal works as well as research during his professional career, and published his works regularly. He wrote his first ghazal in 1950 at the age of 13. His first nazm Salaam ae musafir was published in 1953 in a magazine. He learnt the art of writing Urdu poems, and later published three books in Urdu poetry. Some of his research works include - Urdu mein classiki tanqid, Islah nama, Manzoom tarjume ka amal, Manaviyyat ki talaash, Urdu shairi men haiat ke tajurbe, Tanqidi pairae, Harf e barhana, Nazim e jadeed ki falsafiyana asas, Aruzi aur fanni masail, Minar e sadaa etc.
