Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman Biography

Vidwan Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman is a very prominent figure associated with Mridangam, musical instrument. For his contributions towards the field of music, he was awarded with Madras Music Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 2001. Padma Vibhushan in 2010, Padma Shri in 1988, Kalaimamani and Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1992 are other major honours. At present times, he is the most prominent name among the artists who play this music instrument.

 

He has accompanied many leading Carnatic vocalists post-independence and Alathur Brothers, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Dr Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Dr M. Balamuralikrishna, Musiri Subramania Iyer, Palladam Sanjeeva Rao, Mysore Chowdiah, Rajamanickam Pillai, Papa Venkataramiah, G. N. Balasubramaniam, Madurai Mani Iyer, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, Nedunuri Krishnamurthi, Voleti Venkateswarulu, T. R. Mahalingam etc are some of the big names.

 

Umayalpuram Kasiviswanatha Sivaraman was born on 17 December 1935 in Umayalpuram, Tanjore district in British India. His father, an Allopathic doctor by profession was a patron of arts. P. Kasiviswanatha Iyer and Kamalambal were his parents. Kasiviswanatha Iyer was also proficient in Homeopathy, Ayurveda and Unani treatment methods too.

 

Sivaraman learnt the art of mridyangam for long 15 years under Arupathi Natesa Iyer, followed by Tanjavoor Vaidyanatha Iyer, Palghat Mani Iyer & Kumbakonam Rangu Iyengar. He also completed his graduation, both in arts and law from Madras University. During his college days, he used to go to music concerts. Though he attended IAS coaching classes for some time, he later dropped it to concentrate a career in music. He was encouraged by his guru Mani Iyyer, and he moved to Chennai in 1955, where he got opportunity to see live many great concerts, and also got opportunity to perform.

 

Post-independence he got opportunity to accompany several leading Carnatic vocalists for live concerts, and has also given Jugalbandi performances throughout; Zakhir Hussain, Ustad Allah Rakha, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ram Narain and Pt. Ravi Shankar to mention a few. Government of India honoured him with Padma Sri in 1988 and Padma Vibushan in 2010. Same year he also received an honorary doctorate from University of Kerala.
