Uma Dogra Biography

Uma Dogra is Kathak exponent who follows Jaipur Gharana (tradition). She is the senior most disciple of Padma Shri Pandit Durga Lal. Uma has spent more than 4 decades in the field of Kathak performance. She has also worked with many Indian artists and actresses on stage like Amjad Ali Khan, Hema Malini, Asha Parekh, Saroja Vidyanathan etc. Uma also received training in Hindustani music from her father. She worked with Asha Parekh for very popular series, Jhankaar for Doordarshan.

 

Uma Dogra was born in Malviya Nagar of New Delhi on 23 April 1957. She was born to classical singer & sitar player Motiram Sharma and Shakuntala Sharma. Her father was a disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. She learnt Hindustani music from her father. She was initiated to the world of dance at the age of 7, and Bansi Lal was her first guru. Later she joined Kathak Kendra at New Delhi where she received training from Reba Vidyarthi. During her formative years she became a disciple of veteran artists of the field, Birju Maharaj and Pandit Durga Lal. As a Kathak dancer, her gurus groomed her, and these associations also built a strong basement in learning and performing.

 

In 1984 she moved to Mumbai and worked with Hema Malini for a few live concerts as well as television shows, based on dance. She also worked with legendary actress Asha Parekh. She established the Sam Ved Society for Performing Arts in 1990 after the death of her guru, and has been teaching students for the past 28 years or so. She is frequent in dance performances in many leading cultural festivals of India, such as Khajuraho Dance Festival, Margazhi festival etc.
