Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar was born in Nagpur on January 14, 1955. His father N D Kashalkar, though a lawyer by profession was an amateur vocalist and musicologist who taught young Ulhas the first lessons of music. Later he completed post-graduation in  music at Nagpur University, as the University topper. He also received training from Rajabhau Kogje and P N Khardenavis. He seriously learnt music from Pandit Ram Marathe and Gajananrao Josh.
