Ujjayinee Roy Biography

Ujjayinee Roy is an Indian playback singer and actress who predominantly works in south Indian cinema and TV industry. She sings for Tamil, Kannada, Telugu films, apart from Bollywood. She marked her debut with 2007 movie, Azhagiya Tamil Magan singing a couple of songs for A. R. Rahman, and later sang a few number of songs in other languages as well. Apart from A. R. Rahman, she sang for Harris Jayaraj, Vijay Ebenezer, Devi Sri Prasad and many other composers of south Indian cinema. In 2014, she rendered her voice for Bollywood song, "Naacho Re", belonging to Jai Ho, and composed by Devi Sri Prasad.

 

Ujjayinee Roy was born and brought up in Agartala, Tripura. She is trained in Hindustani music, and also Bharatnatyam, south Indian dance form. She learnt music under the guidance of two gurus, Ganesh Dev Burman and then Pandit Ramendranath Dey, before starting her professional career in music and giving public performances. Since the age of 7, she started singing for AIR and Doordarshan. Later she became a graded artist and composer with All India Radio. She completed her physiology degree at Maharaja Bir Bikram College in 1996. She started music bands like Tribe and Aurko during her college days, and also started appearing in singing reality shows in the 1990s.

 

In 2007 she got her break to film playback singing through Azhagiya Tamil Magan, where she sang a couple of songs, "Nee Marilyn Monroe" and "Valayapatti Thavile". In 2008 she marked her Telugu debut with "Ghanana Ghanana" song of the movie, King. Her Kannada debut happened with the song "Let's Start" for the movie, Ouija in 2015. She is currently active in the industry as a television actress, and has also done supporting roles in a couple of Tamil films.
