Ubaid Azam Azmi Biography

Ubaid Azam Azmi is an Urdu poet and scholar who has penned lyrics for a few Bollywood movies. He is also a well-known writer and a respected Prosodian. He belongs to Phulpur, Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh and his father is a former MLA of the state. "Man tu Shudi" of Baat ban gayi was penned by Azmi. He is presently the Editor of the Urdu Channel - Monthly Literary Magazine. Laazawaal (poetry collection) and Arooz (Urdu prosody) are his latest published books and he has begun his career his career in Bollywood as a lyricist most recently in 2013. He has also penned lyrics for the movie, Kuch log and the movie is not released yet. He has performed in hundreds of mushairas across the country and regularly recites poems for radio stations.

 

He was born in 1970 in a family with a strong political background. Azmi's father Shaikh Shamim Ahmed is a politician and ex. M.L.A. from Mumbai. He started compositions songs at a very young age and regularly participated in many poetry competitions. He regularly won prizes for writing ghazals since college days. He completed post-graduation in Urdu literature. Obaid has formerly served as the General Secretary of All India Urdu Council. His writings get regularly published in leading Urdu magazines and newspapers.

 

Meer Taqi Meer Award, Kaavya Bhooshan Award and Mirza Ghalib Award for Baitbaazi are the major awards received by him. He regularly appears on many Urdu channels reciting ghazals and his recitations are aired in AIR and other radio stations as well. He has penned lyrics for leading singers - Asha Bhosle, Sonu Nigam and Shaan.
