U. K. Kumaran Biography

U. K. Kumaran is a Malayalam novelist, short story writer, essayist and journalist from Kerala. His short story collections, ‘Policukarante Penmakkal’ earned him Kerala sahitya Academy award in the year 2012. His published novels are Valayam, Oridathum Ethathavar, Mulappaal, Aasakthi, Ezhuthappettathu, Ottavaakkil Oru Jivitam and Thakshankunnu Swaroopam. Oru Bandhu Kaathirukkunnu and Anubhavam, Orma, Yathra are his memorials and his biography work on Mahatma Gandhi is titled Gandhiji. His works also include Novelettes and Short story collections.

He was born on May 11, 1950 in Payyoli, Kozhikode. His school education was completed at Government AUP School, Kizhoor and Government High School, Payyoli. He took degree in economics from Guruvayurappan College, Kozhikode and then completed diploma in Journalism and Public Relations. After his studies, he started off as a journalist, in Veekshanam Vaarika as Assistant Editor. Later he joined Kerala Kaumudi, Kozhikode and later served many decorative positions in the field of journalism. State Vice President of Kerala Pathrapravarthaka Union, Vice Chairman of Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Advisory committee member of National Book Trust and the director of Navakerala Co-operative Publishing House are among those.

His literal career began at the age of 17 when he published the short story, "Chalanam". Later he became a prominent writer of Malayalam, particularly as a short story writer and won Kerala sahitya Academy award for the year 2012. Atayalangal Vannukondirikkunnu, Veedu Samsarikkunnu, Puthiya Irippidangal, Rail Palathil Oru Kudumbam Dhyanikkunnu, Achchan Urangunnilla, Orale Thedi Oraal, Tiranjedutha Kathakal, Sancharikkunna Govani, Priyappetta Kathakal, Kannadakalkkappurath, Ottakkoru Stri Odunnathinte Rahasyamenth?, Matibhramangalude Kaalam, Kudumba Museum, Policukaarante Penmakkal, Onninum Orakalavumilla, Madhu Shaityam, Madutha Kali, Paavam Kallan, Madhye Ingane Kaanunna Nerath, Valanja Kaalulla Kuta and Dambathya Katha are his short story anthologies.
