Tulsidas Biography

Tulsidas was a Hindu poet-saint, reformer and philosopher renowned for his devotion to the god Rama. The great epic - Ramacharitha manas is the masterpiece work of Tulsidas. It’s the translation of Valmiki Ramayana to Hindi (in the vernacular Awadhi). Ramacharitha manas is regarded as the greatest of all Hindu books of North India. It’s widely believed that he was the incarnation of Saint Valmiki. It’s believed that he is the author of Hanuman Chalisa too. Tulsidas spent most of his life in the city of Varanasi. Ramleela plays were also initiated by this great poet. His works have a deep influence on Indian culture as well as literature and his popularity is spread worldwide. Other works of Tulsidas are Barvai Ramayana, Parvati Mangal, Janaki Mangal, Ramalala Nahachhu, Ramagya Prashna and Vairagya Sandipini. Hanuman Chalisa, Sankatmochan Hanumanashtak, Hanuman Bahuka and Tulsi Satsai are the four works popularly attributed to Tulsidas.

He was a great philosopher and spiritual leader who believed Nirguna Brahman and Saguna Brahman are one. His principles of life and philosophy are highlighted in dialogues between Kakbhushundi and Garuda in the Uttar Kand of his greatest epic, Ramcharitmanas. He wrote this great epic in accordance with principles of Puranas, Vedas, Upavedas, Tantra and Smriti. As per the words of poetess Mahadevi Verma, Rama as we know today is the Rama of Tulsidas. No doubt it was through Tulsidas that Rama became an iconic figure in India.

Tulsidas was born on the seventh day of the bright half of the lunar Hindu month Shraavana. It’s widely believed that he was born in Rajapur (Chitrakuta) in UP on the banks of Yamuna River. There are varied conclusions in his date of birth too (1497 or 1532). Tulsidas is also known as Goswami Tulsidas. He was left by his parents due to an inauspicious astrological configuration and was brought up by his maid. But she died when Tulsidas was only 5 years old. Rambola (birth name) was adopted by Narharidas. It’s believed that he was married and his wife’s name was Ratnavali. Later he became a sadhu and all his creations of wonderful bhajans and epics were done after this.
