Tripuraneni Ramaswamy Biography
Tripuraneni Ramaswamy was a renowned a social reformer, poet and playwright. Popularly known as "Kavi Raju" he was the first writer who introduced "rationalism" and "Humanism" to Telugu literature. He played a significant role in the cultural awakening in his state, a movement similar to Ram Mohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar in Bengal. Noted Radical humanist and writer, Tripuraneni Gopichand was his son. Pitcheswara Rao Atluri, noted writer was his son-in-law; Atluri married Tripuraneni Ramaswamy’s youngest daughter Chouda Rani. Chouda Rani too was a well-known writer.
He was born in the village of Angaluru in the Krishna District in 1887 in a middle class agricultural family. He passed his Matriculation Examination at the age of 23 and it was during this time, he rose to fame through two plays, "Karempudi Kadanam” and "Kurukshetra Sangramam" and both these plays were based on the Palanadu battle and Kuruskshetra battle respectively. During his intermediate studies at Noble College at Bandar, he continued with his literary career. In 1914, he went aboard to learn English, law and modern European culture. Through his writings he pleaded Indian support to Home Rule movement started by Annie Besant and also wrote patriotic songs to catalyse Indian freedom struggle movement. He stood against Congress and its freedom struggle movement.
He returned to India and started practising law in Tenali. As a social reformer he was active full time through social activities as well as writings. He was against social evils like caste system and also stood against heavy expenditure spent for traditional Indian weddings. "Sambhukavadha", "Suthashrama geethaalu', 'Dhoortha maanava', 'Khooni', 'Bhagavadgita', "Kuppuswamy Satakam", 'Rana Pratap' and 'Kondaveeti pathanam' are among his noted works. Sambhuka Vadha was his controversial work.
