Trilok Gurtu Biography
Trilok Gurtu is an Indian percussionist and composer who is proficient in fusion music as well. Apart from independent albums he has also done collaborations with both Indian artists as well as across the globe. He is the son of noted singer Shobha Gurtu who encouraged him since early childhood. He has been a part of Tabla Beat Science formed by Indian maestro Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell in 1999. Gurtu has garnered a number of prestigious awards and nominations including Best Overall Percussionist winner.
Trilok Gurtu was born on 30 October 1951 in Mumbai in a musical family. His grandfather was a noted Sitar player and his mother is a noted vocalist Shobha Gurtu. He was introduced to the world of music at the age of 6. He learnt tabla under Shah Abdul Karim. He started playing western drum kit in the 1970s and was attracted towards western jazz and initially learned Western music without awareness of overdubbing. He joined trumpeter Don Cherry in Europe and worked with him for 2 years. He was associated with universally known Jazz group Oregon and also completed the quartet consisting of Jan Garbarek, L. Shankar and Zakir Hussain.
In 1988 Trilok performed with his own group and released his first album titled, "Usfret". He has been an integral part of The John McLaughlin Trio for the next four years. Indian rhythms to "The Crazy Saints" received positive response from audience. Band tours established Trilok as a giant name in the world of modern jazz and rock across the globe. Release of "Remembrance" in 2002 was another breakthrough of his career. He is a familiar name to Indian film industry also.
