Trichur V. Ramachandran Biography

Trichur V. Ramachandran is a Carnatic music vocalist and renowned artist of present times. He hails from Thrissur of Kerala, and hence ‘Trichur’ tag is added to his name. For his overall contributions towards the field of Carnatic music government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan award in 2003. He is also a recipient of elite honours such as Madras Music Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 2012 from the Madras Music Academy, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2003, Sangeetha Choodamani title by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in 2001 etc. He received the privilege to learn music from some of the legendary artists of 20th century like G. N. Balasubramaniam, M L Vasanthakumari etc.

 

Trichur V. Ramachandran was born on 9 August 1940 in Thrissur, Cochin State. Now his birthplace is a part of Kerala state. He grew up as a talented youngster who sang for school functions. Later he represented his college for several competitions. He started his musical lessons at a very young age and gave his first public performance at the age of 14. He was then a prime disciple of G. N. Balasubramaniam.

 

He continued his musical training under M. L. Vasanthakumari after receiving a cultural scholarship from central government. Later he married well-known Carnatic artist Charumathi Ramachandran, a disciple of his guru M. L. Vasanthakumari. Charumathi is best known for introducing Hindustani music in Carnatic music, and she was one of the early artists to do so.

 

He is a devoted singer, teacher and student. As of now, he has completed five long decades of performing Carnatic recitals. Now also he is fully active in musical scene with his musical presence. This veteran artist with a golden voice is quite regular in music festivals across south India. In 2009 he received Vidhya Tapasvi title from TAPAS Cultural Foundation.
