Tochi Raina Biography

Tochi Raina is a successful playback singer of Bollywood. Male version of Iktara of Wake up Sid, Aali Re and Mera Kaat Kaleja Dilli of No One Killed Jessica, Saibo for Shor in the City, Bulle Shah of A Wednesday, Mallo Malli of Mausam, Kabira of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Maldar Ki Jeb for the movie Bhindi Baazaar Inc are his memorable hits. The song of Shor in the city earned him multiple nominations for best playback singer.

 

Raina belongs to Bihar and he is of Punjab origin. His education was done at Nepal. He was born in a family of renowned musicians. His family originally hailed from Kohat, Pakistan but they had to move to Patiala during partition in 1947. Pandit Vinod Kumar of Patiala gharana was his first guru, under whom Raina learnt for first 10 years. His grandmother was a sitar player and his uncle Ratan Singh was a violin player for the Mumbai music industry, yesterdays. Raina got privilege to learn under Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Bhure Khan, Altaf Hussain Saarang, Pandit Mani Prasadji and Pandit Sitaramji are his other gurus. Later he got attached to sufi music too.

 

He reached Mumbai to pursue a career in Bollywood and Neeraj Pandey’s A Wednesday was his debut movie as a playback singer. The song ‘Bulle Shah’ was appreciated by music lovers thus welcoming him to the industry. He is a trained tabla player and has learnt a little bit western music too. The hit song of Yeh Jawani hai deewani, Kabeera earned him Global Indian Music Academy award for the best duet alongside with Rekha Bhardwaj. He also owns a music band - Band of Bandagi.
