Tiruvidaimarudur Mahadevan. R, also known as Mahadevan. R or simply Devan was a humorous Tamil writer who lived in the 20^th century. This accomplished writer was known for his witty and humorous stories. Thuppariyum Sambu is his celebrated work. He was also a journalist by profession, who served as Managing editor of Ananda Vikatan weekly magazine. As a writer he explored different kinds, styles and themes of writing, and it includes travelogues, recipes, detective stories and social dramas. He created a niche of his own in fictional writing through his creative thinking.

He was born on 8 September 1913 in Thiruvidaimarudur, Thanjavur District in British India. His early days were spent in his village, where he completed his schooling. For higher education he moved to Kumbakonam, where he completed his graduation degree. Later he worked as a school teacher for a year, before starting his illustrious journalist career. He joined Tamil weekly magazine, Ananda Vikatan as a sub-editor in 1933. Working with this journal for many years, he served as its managing Editor too. He assumed this power after Kalki Krishnamurthy left Vikatan. He has worked under Kalki Krishnamurthy and S. S. Vasan.

During his long term association with Viketan, he served as an editor, columnist and writer too. He was associated with Viketan till his death in 1957 aged only 43. He wrote about 20 serial novels, more than 500 stories, articles and travelogues for his publication, and earned immense popularity as a writer. Many of his short stories became immensely popular. He has served as Chairman of the Tamil Writers' Guild twice. He was shortlived, aged only 43. But his works are immensely popular till now, and praised for his creative writing style quite different from others.
