Tilok Chand Mehroom Biography

Tilok Chand Mehroom was a renowned Urdu poet and educationalist from undivided Punjab in British rule who won accolades for his rendering of naat at mushairas. His simple lifestyle and deep dislike of religious discrimination earned him a lot of admiration during his life time. He lived during the period, 1 July 1887 – 6 January 1966.  The annual literary convention of the Government of Punjab dedicated its 1962 session to Mehroom for his services towards literature. His son Jagan Nath Azad was also an Urdu poet, writer, journalist and academician, best remembered for writing Tarana-e-Pakistan which was broadcasted from Radio Lahore on the night of 14 August 1947 as Pakistan’s national anthem.

 

Tilok Chand Mehroom was born on 1 July 1887 in Mianwali District, North West Frontier Province. His village Mousa Noor Zaman Shah is now a part of Pakistan. His family was into farming. Because of the frequent floods of Indus River, the family later relocated to Isakhel. During his school days Tilok was brilliant in academics and used to get scholarships. He passed the matriculation examination in 1907, and later completed teacher’s training at Central Training College, Lahore and also completed graduation in arts.

 

Soon after completing his matriculation, in 1908, he started his professional career as a school teacher. He taught English. Later he taught at many schools and colleges and remained a renowned academician during his lifetime. He worked at Rawalpindi for many years in the pre-independent era, and after partition he permanently moved to Delhi. Till retirement he worked at Camp College as professor of Urdu. Mehroom died on 6 January 1966 after brief illness. As a writer, his first major publication was Ganj-e-Ma'ani. He has been associated with many publications in the role of an editor during his lifetime.
