Tillotama Shome Biography

Tillotama Shome is a talented Bengali actress known for accepting unconventional, different and challenging roles. This actress has constantly managed to garner applauses for the wonderful choice of roles she accepts. Till now she has accepted roles from English, Hindi and Punjabi too and has regularly appeared in many English productions made on Indian themes. She has also won several awards for her acting talents. She played the brief role of Alice – in Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding released in 2001 and a few more movies like Butterfly and Shadows of Time, before she moved to New York to do her masters in Theatre at New York University.

 

Shome was born in Kolkata. But her childhood was spent in different places of India as her father was an air force officer. She studied at Delhi's Lady Shri Ram College and also joined Arvind Gaur's Asmita theatre group, where she performed as an artist. Later in 2004 she moved to New York to do her Master’s program in educational theatre. She returned to Mumbai in 2008 and was associated with several assignments while at New York. Once returned to India, she completed many of her existing projects. It includes many English short films like Little Box of Sweets, Long After etc.

 

In 2009, she played the title role of Preeti in the film, - Zamir and Preeti: A Love Story. Since then she is associated with the industry and known for her distinct and powerful roles. She played the role of a rape victim in 'Children of War', a movie based on the 1971 Bangladesh genocide. She was also seen in the highly praised Indian - Italian movie, based on the Bangla short story Choli Ke Peeche, ‘Gangor’ and in 2014 English movie – Sold. She has also appeared in a few Bollywood commercial movies like – Aatma, Shanghai, Turning 30 etc.
