Thuravoor Viswambharan Biography

Thuravoor Viswambharan was a literary luminary, well known for his works on 'Mahabharath'. The work titled – Mahabharata Darshanam – Oru Punarvayana made him an extremely popular writer among the masses. He was an ex- Chief Editor of Janmabhumi & also a retired professor. He had a brief stint in politics as well and was BJP candidate at Tripunithura in the last assembly election. He was a a vedic scholar, active social worker and writer. He passed away on October 20, 2017 in a private hospital at Kochi. He was battling with cancer for a long time. He was 74 years old.

 

He was born on Thuravoor, Alappuzha district on 4 September 1943. Padmanabhan and Madhavi were his parents, and his father was a Pandit in Ayurveda and Sanskrit. He was married to Kanchana. The couple had two daughters. After studies he served as a professor at Ernakulam Maharaja’s College for a long time. He was a professor in Malayalam, Sanskrit, Indian Mythology and Vedic Science. He delivered lectures on different Hindu epic, Vedic and science topics in a programme called 'Bharatha Dharsanam’ aired on Amrita TV.

 

Kurukshetra Prakasan Managing Director, Kochi International Book Festival Association Trust, State Chief of Tapasya Kala Sahitya Vedi, Chief Editor of Janmabhumi Newspaper etc are some of the leading positions held by him. Kerala Sahitya Academy Endowment, Dr. C. P. Menon Puraskar, Kerala Samajan Award of Malayali Samajam, Janmashtami Puraskar, Amrita Keerti Puraskar by Amrita Madh etc are the major honours received by him.

 

He unsuccessfully contested in Kerala Assembly elections on BJP ticket from Tripunithura constituency in 2016. A Sanskrit Pandit, he had deep knowledge in Hindu epics and mythology. Mahabharata Darshanam – Oru Punarvayana is a magnificent contribution to Malayalam literature related to epics. He was known to be a vast source of different topics, apart from epics and Sanskrit, astrology, grammar, poetry, Ayurveda to name a few.
