Thupstan Chhewang Biography

Thupstan Chhewang is an Indian politician who hails from Jammu and Kashmir. A parliamentarian at present, he got elected to 14th Lok Sabha of India from the Ladakh constituency of Jammu and Kashmir. He is associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. He is married into the Royal family of Ladakh. His wife, Princess Sarla Chewanng is the eldest daughter of King Chhosgyal Kunzang Namgyal. He is a descendant of Tsepel Tondup Namgyal, last independent ruler of Ladakh, from mother’s side. He is a 6th generation descendant of this ruler. He is associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. He was associated with Ladakh Union Territory Front earlier.

 

Thupstan Chhewang was born on 1 September 1947 in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. He belongs to Village Shey, Leh district. He practices Buddhism. He belongs to a royal family from mother side and a descendant of Tsepel Tondup Namgyal. His father Shey Lonpo Sonam Tsephel is an aristocrat and social worker who educated poor kids. Many of the predecessors from his mother’s family have ruled Ladakh. After completing his primary education in his village, Thupstan Chhewang resumed his studies at Srinagar. He completed his matriculation from Varanasi in the year 1962. He completed his LLB studies from Delhi in 1967. He is married into the Royal family of Ladakh. He and his wife Princess Sarla Chewanng have two kids.

 

His active political career began in the year 1972. As a political activist he was fully engaged in political activities throughout 1970s, and he fought for the weaker sections of the society. He also served as the President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association from 1988 to 1995. He formed the Ladakh Union Territory Front in year 2000. He contested Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 2004 as a LUTF candidate, and in 2014, won the general elections with BJP ticket.
