Thomas Rathnam Biography

Thomas Rathnam is a music composer from Vridhachalam, Tamil Nadu, who works in many languages including Tamil and English. He was born into a family of scholars and artists from Kancheepuram which include many great names of spiritual leaders, architects and writers including Kumara Swamy Desikar, Velaiyar, Siva Prakasar, Karunai Prakasar and Sundaresanar. His grandfather S.V.S. Rathinam was a prominent freedom fighter and administrator from Tamil Nadu. His brother Vincent Therraisnathan is an actor and singer associated with south Indian cinema and they together have worked on many projects. Vincent is also known as a social worker and publisher.

 

He was born in Vridhachalam, Tamil Nadu. R. Theraisnathan and S. Amala Mary are his parents. Though born in a prominent Hindu family of Tamil Nadu, one of his forefathers Swaminatha Desikar got converted to Christianity in the late 19th century and that’s how after that his family followed the new religion. He completed Electronics engineering from Government College of Technology, Coimbatore and later completed BGL from Annamalai University and DMT from Madras University. Like his brother, he is also associated with social work and politics and a member of Natham Trust. He is also known as a writer and publisher and a recipient of "Isai Arui Thomas Rathnam" for the year 2007.

 

As a film music composer, he has composed music for one Kannada and two Tamil films - Karuvarai Pookkal and Thoppul Kodi in Tamil and Banna Bannada Loka in Kannada. Vincent Therraisnathan has rendered his voice for a few songs in his compositions. In 2004 he made a cameo appearance in English movie, Waves.
