Thomas Kailath Biography

Thomas Kailath is an electrical engineer, professor information theorist, control engineer and entrepreneur based in US. He is the only person from Kerala to receive National Medal of Science, an honor bestowed by the President of the United States to individuals in science and engineering. He received this honour from then President Barack Obama in 2014 for transformative contributions to the fields of information and system science, mentoring young students and a few more fields. Kailath has authored several books, including Linear Systems. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan award in 2009 for his contribution to Science and Engineering and also 2009 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Information and Communication Technology.

 

Thomas Kailath was born in Pune, Maharashtra in the year 1935. His parents are originally from Kerala, belonging to a Christian family in Chittoor. His schooling and engineering studies were done at Pune. For advanced studies he moved abroad and enrolled at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received his Master's degree in 1959 and his doctorate degree in 1961 thus becoming the first Indian-born student to receive a doctorate in electrical engineering from MIT. After studies he continued with his research works and professional career as a professor at different universities in US.

 

His name is also listed as an ISI highly cited researcher. Currently he is the Hitachi America Professor of Engineering, Emeritus, at Stanford University, who has already supervised about 80 Ph.D. theses. His brother-in-law T. J. S. George is a prominent journalist of the country, who is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan. He has married twice. He first married Sarah Kailath in 1962 and had 4 children. She passed away in 2008. He remarried Dr. Anuradha Luther Maitra, a retired economics professor in 2013.
