Thomas Isaac Biography

Thomas Isaac is a central committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He has been elected from Alappuzha constituency in 2012 Assembly elections. He was the Finance Minister of Kerala during from 2006 through 2011. While working under Kerala State Planning Board, he was in charge of the People's Plan campaign in Kerala. PPC Campaign is considered as a landmark in the history of decentralization experience throughout India. He has been a professor at the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram. He is a noted author too and has published several books and articles in Malayalam and English. Democracy at work in an Indian industrial cooperative: the story of Kerala Dinesh Beedi, Kalliasseri experiment in local level planning, Modernisation and employment: the coir industry in Kerala and Local Democracy and Development: People's campaign for decentralised planning in Kerala are noted English works that he has co-written by some author else.

Thomas was born in 1952 in Kottappuram, Kodungallur of Thrissur district to T. P. Mathew and Saramma Mathew. He completed his school education at his hometown. He has been an intelligent student and later took PhD in Economics from Centre for Development Studies (Jawaharlal Nehru University affiliation). During his studies, he became associated with students’ movements of Communist party in Kerala and became a member of Students Federation of India (SFI). He has held posts in the SFI at college, district and state level.

As a writer, Thomas has won Kerala Sahitya Academy Award in 1989 for the book - Kerala: Land and Man. Other noted individual works include - Political Economy of Surrender, Construction of False Consent: Critique of Malayalam Media, The Withering Coconut, Peoples Planning: Theory and Practice and ABC of Political Economy.
