Thomas Chazhikadan Biography

Thomas Chazhikadan is a UDF politician and parliamentarian from the south Indian state of Kerala. An Indian Chartered Accountant, he got elected to state assembly for the first time in 1991 from Ettumanoor constituency and served in this position for two terms. His younger brother Babu Chazhikadan is also a politician. Thomas is a politician belonging to Kerala fraction - Kerala Congress (M). He got successfully elected to 17th Lok Sabha in May 2019 for the first time, and he was elected from Kottayam. He is one among the 19 out of 20 UDF candidates from Kerala who won Lok Sabha elections when Modi wave swept whole India.

 

Thomas Chazhikadan hails from Ettumanoor, Kerala. He is a Chartered Accountant. His entry to politics in the early 1990s was quite co-incidence, and never as expected. His younger brother was originally chosen as the candidate from Ettumanoor in state assembly elections 1991. But following his unexpected death, Thomas contested in his position for state assembly elections and got elected. He retained his seat in 1996 state assembly elections as well. Initially associated with Indian National Congress, he later switched to Kerala Congress (M) formed by the veteran leader K. M. Mani. His party forms alliance with both left and right parties, according to situations.

 

In 2019 elections, his party formed alliance with UDF and successfully contested Lok Sabha elections. A two-term legislator, it is his first term as parliamentarian. He represents Kottayam constituency and won over P. C. Thomas of BJP and V. N. Vasavan of LDF. He got 46.25% of votes polled, while his opponents got only 17.04% and 34.58% respectively. He was chosen as UDF candidate after a lot of controversies this time.
