Thirunalloor Karunakaran Biography

Thirunalloor Karunakaran was a renowned poet, scholar and teacher from Kerala. He was associated with leftist movement in Kerala. Apart from poems, he has also authored a few non-fiction works such as Malayalabhashaparinamam Sidhanthangalum Vasthuthakalum, Anusmaranangal, Praacheena Bharathathile Bhouthikavaadam and Oru Mahayudhathinte Paryavasanam. He was an integral part of Pink decade of Malayalam poetry - roughly the late 40s and early 50s which exclusively belongs to young writers of leftist ideologies.


He was born in Perinad of Kollam in 1924. Thirunalloor is his family name. He was born to P.K.Padmanabhan and N.Lakshmy. He learnt Sanskrit in traditional way before joining primary school. He was associated with the working class political and leftist movement during his younger days. His first book was a translation of a poem by Oliver Goldsmith during his school days. Since then he wrote articles and poems for school periodicals regularly. After that his works had a deep influence by leftist ideologies and during his college days, he got opportunity to meet Communist leaders like R.Sugathan and M. N. Govindan Nair. He completed graduation in history from S. N. College, Kollam. He also worked as a teacher for a short period there, before joining Thiruvananthapuram University College to pursue his Master’s. Then he worked at different colleges of Thiruvananthapuram city as a teacher.


He served as a member of the Kerala Public Service Commission for 6 years and also worked as an editor of communist party magazine, Janayugam. Asan Award (1984), Vayalar Award (1988) and Muloor Award (1992) are the major honours received by him. He spent his last phase of his life at his village on the banks of river Ashtamudi.
