Thiruchi Loganathan Biography

Thiruchi Loganathan was a popular playback singer associated with Tamil cinema, who was active in the 1950s and 1960s. One of the leading singers of Tamil cinema in the 1950s, Manthiri Kumari (1950) and Parasakthi (1952) are his memorable movies. He was the son-in-law of the popular comedy pair of Tamil cinema 1940s - Kali N. Rathnam and C. T. Rajakantham. Loganathan was married to Rajalakshmi, and their son - T. L. Maharajan is also a popular playback singer and a musician. It’s widely accepted that Thiruchi Loganathan was the first playback singer of Tamil cinema, who was prominent in the era of golden oldies of 1950s. This legendary play back singer was also a Carnatic singer.

 

Tiruchi Loganathan was born on 24 July 1924. He started his film career in the early 1950s. Known for his golden voice, he owns several memorable hits of 1950s. Maanilam Mel Sila Manideral of Naasthigan and the lullaby Chinna arumbu malarum are among his golden hits. He rendered his golden voice for some memorable hits of 1950s including - Aasaiye Alai Pola, Kannalum Kavipaaduthey, Chinnakkutti Naththana, Vazhkaiyil Paadam, Vaarai Nee Vaarai, Ulavum Thendral, Innithai Naame, Koovamell Koovidum, Kalyana Samayal Satham, Oorar Urangayile, Purushan Veettil and many more.

 

This singing legend was associated with many leading music directors of his time. His voice was frequently used by K. V. Mahadevan, T. G. Lingappa, S. M. Subbaiah Naidu, G. Govindarajulu Naidu, V. Dakshinamoorthy, Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy, Ghantasala etc. He frequently sang duets with the singers - P. Leela and Jikki. His male duets with Seerkazhi Govindarajan and Mariyappa are also still remembered by music lovers. With the new era of Tamil singers and music, he got fewer opportunities since 1960s. Yet he was associated with the field till his death in late 1980s. He passed away on 17 November 1989.
