Thetakudi Harihara Vinayakram Biography

Thetakudi Harihara Vinayakram is an Indian percussionist. He is also known by the name, Vikku Vinayakram. He is specialist in ghatam, an earthen pot, used in live concerts of Carnatic music. He is a Grammy award winner who was a part of Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum to receive award for Best World Music Album. He has also received Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in the year 2012 for his contributions to Indian classical music. He was honoured with Padma Shri by Government of India in 2002. T. H. Subhash Chandran, a specialist of Khadam is his brother.

 

Vinayakram was born to Kalaimaamani T. R. Harihara Sharma, a musician and teacher in Chennai on June 24, 1944. He was attached to music from a younger age. His live concerts started at a younger age of 13 also. His first performance occurred on March 5, 1957 at the Sri Rama Navami festival in Thoothukudi. He can accompanied great Carnatic singers of 20th century with ‘Khadam’. A few of such celebrated artists include Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, M. S. Subbulakshmi, Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, G. N. Balasubramaniam, Madurai Mani Iyer, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and Maharajapuram Santhanam.  

 

He has played along with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain during early 70’s and thus ‘khadam’ and this artist received international appreciation for the first time. A few of the released albums include - Mysterium Tremendum (2012) and Planet Drum (1991) by Mickey Hart Band and Natural Elements (1977) and A Handful of Beauty (1976) by Shakti musical group. In 2000, he received Hafiz Ali Khan Award for “unmatched contribution in the field of music”. Vinayakram played Khadam and morsing for Grammy award winning album of Mickey Hart. He is the first south Indian to get this achievement. He was also nominated for the 1996 Grammy Awards for Best World Music Album, where he was associated with L. Shankar and Zakir Hussain.
