Thangam Thennarasu Biography

Thangam Thennarasu is an Indian politician from Tamil Nadu belonging to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party (DMK). He is a former cabinet minister of Tamil Nadu state. He served as the minister for School Education of Tamil Nadu during 2006-2011, under Karunanidhi’s ministry. He is the son of well-known politician, Aruppukottai V. Thangapandian, who won state assembly elections in 1989 and 1996 from Aruppukottai constituency. Thangam Thennarasu followed his father’s legacy and has been elected from the same constituency twice in 1997/98 by-election, and 2006 election. Later he won state assembly elections two more times from Tiruchuli constituency, and currently the standing MLA too.

Thangam Thennarasu hails from a political family of Mallankinaru in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu. He inherited politics from his father, Aruppukottai V. Thangapandian, a 2-time MLA. He has one sister, Thamizhachi Thangapandian. He got into active politics after the death of his father in 1997. His father had won Aruppukottai constituency for the second time in 1996 elections. After his death, when by-election was declared, DMK party chose Thangam Thennarasu as their candidate and he won the assembly elections too. He successfully contested from the same seat in 2006 elections too, and became the minister for School Education.

When Tiruchuli constituency was newly created in 2011, he successfully contested from the seat and the retained the same seat in 2016 state assembly elections too. Currently he is an MLA of Tamil Nadu representing Tiruchuli. For both these terms, AIADMK got majority of seats in state assembly elections and formed the government as well. He has filed a case against alleged irregularities in construction of Tamil Nadu legislative assembly-secretariat complex.
