Thamarai Biography

Thamarai is a famous poet and female lyricist of Tamil language. She has also worked as a journalist before got fully involved with literary world. As a film lyricist, her best songs belong to the movies, Minnale, Kaakha Kaakha, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Pachaikili Muthucharam & Vaaranam Aayiram, in which she teamed up with famous director, Gautham Menon and music director, Harris Jayaraj till a breakup happened between the two. Later she has teamed up with Rahman for Gautham movies starting with Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa.



She is a B. Tech graduate of Production Engineering, Coimbatore and she worked for 6 years there after the completion of course. But her passion to poetry prompted her to move to Chennai. She worked as a freelance journalist and wrote essays, stories and poems while at Chennai. Her works got noticed and she entered film field. She was given first opportunity as a lyricist by director Seeman for the movie, Iniyavale. The song was "Thendral Enthan". Subsequently she wrote lyrics for Thenali and Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen which became instant success. But the real breakthrough came through the movie, Minnale released in 2001 where the music was given by Harris Jayaraj. Its songs proved to be the breakthrough of both the careers of its composer and lyricist. The romantic track, Vaseegara sung by Bombay Jayshree was the real turning point of her career. The movie was directed by Gautham Menon and thus started the magic trio of Gautham Menon - Harris Jayaraj - Thamarai.



As a lyricist, she received Filmfare awards twice - Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010) and Vaaranam Aayiram (2008). The songs of Thenali earned her Tamil Nadu state awards for the year 2000. Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal, Pasanga, Ghajani and Subramaniapuram are other noted works.
