Terence Lewis Biography

 

Terence Lewis is a choreographer of Bollywood at present who is specializing in contemporary dance. He is better known as a choreographer and judge in reality dance series, Dance India Dance. He runs his 'Terence Lewis Contemporary Dance Company' in Mumbai and conducts workshops both in India as well as abroad.  As a Bollywood choreographer, his best works are included in the movies – Lagaan, Naach, Jhankar beats, What’s your Rashee?, Ise life mein and Aisha.  At present he acts as a judge for reality shows in dance, Nach Baliye Shriman v/s Shrimati and Nach Baliye 5. Nach Baliye 5 was a big success and two big names were also associated with him as judges – Farah Khan and Shilpa Shetty. In Shriman vs Shrimati, the celebrity couples compete against each other! Terence Lewis was one among the choreographers of Lagaan who won American Choreography Award in the year 2002.

 

Terence Lewis was born in Mumbai on 10th April, 1975. He was born in a Catholic family of Xavier Lewis and Teresa Lewis and he is the youngest of eight siblings. He has done formal training in jazz, ballet and contemporary dance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance in New York. Apart from being a choreographer, he works as a stage performer and artistic director also. He also choreographs live stage shows and music videos.

 

As a Bollywood choreographer his debut work was for Oscar nominated movie, Lagaan. It was titled "Waltz for a Romance". His second choreographed song was the romantic number of Jhankar beats – Dil ne tumko chun liya hai…Suno na. The movie Naach was in news as Ram Gopal Varma concentrated on contemporary dance as well as its beats. The movie title itself suggested the genre to which the movie belongs to. Terence Lewis got an opportunity to give unique dance steps to its actress, Antara Mali and his work was well noticed. Only the dance steps and choreography were the highlights of the film and the movie was a flop.

 

In March 2011, he made a Guinness World Record of choreographing 1,336 people together, to song, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom for the show conducted in Colors TV, hosted by Priety Zinta. He has also done international musicals like The Children of the Sea and Finding Marina with the surviver children of Civil War and Tsunami in Sri Lanka.
