Tejaswini Sawant Biography

Tejaswini Sawant is an Indian sportswoman who competes in the game of shooting. She is supported and sponsored by Olympic Gold Quest, a non-profit organization that encourages talents. She received Arjuna Award from the Government of India for her talents on 29th August 2011.

 

Tejaswini was born on 12th September 1980 in Kolhapur in Maharashtra in a Maratha family. Her father’s name is Ravindra Sawant and her mother’s name is Sunita. Her father is a navy officer and he died in 2010. She has two younger sisters Anuradha Pitre and Vijaymala Gavai. She is coached by Kuheli Ganguly. She is employed at the Sports Department as an officer on special duty.

 

Sawant represented India at the 9th South Asian Sports Federation Games that took place in the year 2004 in Islamabad. She grabbed gold medal in that tournament. She represented the nation in the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games and won many medals in Women’s 10 m Air Rifle singles event and 10 m Air Rifle Pairs event.

 

She took part in the ISSF World Cup in 2009 that was held at Munich and came out with bronze medal in the 50 meters rifle three positions. After winning the 50 m Rifle Prone event in Munich that was held on 8th August 2010, she was made as the World Champion. She got the honor of being the first Indian woman shooter to get gold medal in World Championships.

 

She also competed at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and won silver medal and bronze medal in 50 m rifle singes and women’s event respectively. She also won silver medal in the 3 positions event in women’s 50 m rifle category.
