Tarun Sagar Biography

Tarun Sagar was a Digambara monk, who hailed from Guhanchi, Madhya Pradesh. His views on the role of religion in politics and government stirred up a hornet’s nest. He has a wide following that includes many influential personals including political leaders. He had a massive following in the Jain community also. He breathed his last at Radhapuri Jain Temple around 3 am on 1st September in East Delhi. He passed away at the age of only 51, after prolonged illness. Sagar was suffering from jaundice and other ailments, but had stopped taking medicines for the past few days. He was brought to temple, where he opted for ‘Santhara’, the Jain ritual of fast unto death.

 

His real name is Pawan Kumar Jain. He was born on 26 June 1967 to Pratap Chandra Jain and Shanti Bai Jain in a remote village Guhanchi in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh. He was initiated as Kshullak at the age of 13. He became Digambara monk in 1988, and the rituals were performed by Pushpdant Sagar in Rajasthan. Tarun was 20 years old then. He rose to fame through the show, "Mahavira Vani" aired on GTV.

 

Tarun Sagar exclusively travelled across North India since 2000, addressed speech at many occasions and the illness attacked him in 2007. After that he started using an open palanquin for his travels. Muni Tarun Sagar has often met politicians and government officials as a guest. He belonged to the Digambara sect, yet he promotes a non-sectarian outlook. He has also praised and criticized politicians at many occasions. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not spared. However following his death in 2018, Modi expressed his condolences through twitter.
